Gap year
n. a period of time, usually an academic or calendar year, in which a student takes a break from school to travel, work, or volunteer, typically after ending high school and before starting college. A gap year. That one year after graduating high school where some young people choose to take a break from their studies to...do what? Whatever your definition of visual of a "gap year" has been, push that aside. As you can see from this blog's titled, I'm here to try and convince you why I believe every Christian should take a gap year. Before leaving this page, hear me out: 1. You grow closer to God. Any Christian who takes a gap year should make it intentional. Intentionally seek out God, grow closer to Him, learn more about Jesus through His Word, and how to glorify Him with your future. This is where you seek Him wholeheartedly like you never have before. Growing closer to God will strengthen your faith, make fear disappear, give you confidence of your future--both eternally and here on earth, and will help you stand firm against the devil. 2. You grow closer to others. During an intentional gap year, you will grow closer to those around you during that year, but more importantly, you will make new friends and create new relationships with people--who could very well end up being your best friend, mentor, or even spouse. Just ask others who have taken this intentional gap year, and you'll see what an impact for good it's made on their relationships! 3. You grow closer to yourself. And for the last one: you'll grow closer to yourself. What do I mean by that? You'll find out exactly what your true dreams are. You'll find your heart change. You'll get clarity on what your future holds and where to go from there. As the beginning of your gap year, you could have thought you knew where you were going to college; at the end, your plans could be completely changed for better and will direct you down the path God created for you to take. In short, a gap year is a year of self-discovery--Christian style. I firmly believe every Christian teen should take a gap year and first get a firm foundation of what they believe before jumping into the unknown. While we have nothing to fear about the unknown, we also need to be prepared. Statistics show that nearly 75% of young people who have grown up in a Christian home, going to church, etc, leave the faith after going to college. While we can deny that we won't be "one of them," the truth is, we can't guarantee anything. Only God knows and decides if we will stay faithful, which is why we need to make sure we have a firm foundation before entering the secular world for ourselves, away from the comfort of home and church. I hope this post has given you some insight on why a gap year is so important for a Christian. Feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments! To God alone be the glory!
